UNDP presented “green” projects in the framework of the XIV Republican Environmental Forum

The UNDP has presented its “green” projects implemented in Belarus at the XIV Republican Environmental Forum taking place in Viciebsk.

The "ClimaEast" and "Supporting the Transition to a “Green” Economy in the Republic of Belarus" projects, funded by the European Union, took the central place in the exposition of UNDP at the forum.

At the stand of the “ClimaEast” project the participants and guests of the forum could see the samples of biomass collected in Sporaŭski and Zvaniec reserves. Such biomass can be used as environmentally friendly fuel partially replacing hydrocarbon raw materials, and can also be used in the construction sector.

The project "Supporting the Transition to a “Green” Economy in the Republic of Belarus" presented a pilot initiative focused on creating conditions for the production and replacement of environmentally unsafe coolants with environmentally safe analogue of domestic production. The initiative is implemented by the information and consulting NGO “Sodeistvie Razvitiyu Biznesa”.

Within the framework of the same project, the Belarusian public association "Rest in the Village" presented an initiative focused on establishing the Center of Mythological Tourism in the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve.

Moreover, a special course " Management of the “Green” development of the national economy " was presented at the round table "Promotion of the “Green” Economy in the Republic of Belarus: Principles, Mechanisms, Prospects" held within the framework of the forum. The special course was developed by Elena Dorina, Doctor of Economics, Head of the Department of National economy and national management at the Belarusian State Economic University, within the project "Supporting the Transition to a Green Economy in the Republic of Belarus".

In the course of the round table, the presentation of Mikhail Maksimenkov, the scientific coordinator of the “ClimaEast” project, was also held. The presentation was focused on the potential of wetlands, the technology needed to cut down tree and shrubby vegetation, mowing grass and reeds and using biomass for power, construction and other purposes.

The participants of the forum also got acquainted with other achievements of UNDP “green” portfolio projects aimed at implementing advanced environmental solutions in such areas as energy, organic agriculture, biological diversity, housing and communal services, water management, waste management and others. All these projects are focused on the “green” economy.

At the moment, UNDP's "green” portfolio has 8 projects implemented in Belarus and funded by the EU, GEF, Coca-cola and other donors. Among them – such large-scale projects as “ClimaEast”, “Peatlands-2”, “Energy Efficiency in Buildings”, “Green Cities”, “Energy Efficiency in Schools”, and “Supporting the Transition to a “Green” Economy in the Republic of Belarus”.

The forum was organized with the support of the international technical assistance project "Supporting the Transition to a “Green” Economy in the Republic of Belarus", funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.
