Dnieper-Vistula restoration project to be presented in Brussels

The project, Restoration of the E-40 waterway Dnieper-Vistula: from strategy to planning, will be presented in Brussels on 14 October 2014, BelTA learnt from the project managers.

The conference-presentation will take place at the European parliament. A thematic exhibition will be held as part of the event.

The date to present the project to European politicians was determined at the parliamentary conference of the Council of the Baltic Sea States which took place in Olsztyn, Poland on 26 August. The Council comprises Nordic and Baltic states, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Finland and Russia. Belarus, Poland and Ukraine are most interested in a full-fledged operation of the waterway which is currently non-navigable on the section between Warsaw and Brest. The implementation of the project will help Belarus expand its export potential, raise investment in the construction of logistic centers and develop cruise travel along one of the most picturesque Belarusian rivers, the Pripyat.

The advantages from restoring the waterway from Dnieper to Vistula were presented to the participants of the conference by representatives of the Dnieper-Bug Waterway Company, the leading partner of the project. According to the Belarusian delegation, the waterway will become a new trade route between the ports of the Baltic and Black Seas to transport up to 4 million tonnes of cargo per year. The presentation received a positive feedback from the Council of the Baltic Sea States MPs. Several MPs expressed readiness to advance the idea of restoring the E-40 waterway in the political circles of their countries.

“We hope that such events will help the project get even bigger technical and financial support at the European level. It will accelerate the works on designing and direct hydraulic engineering on the non-navigable parts of the E-40. An international tender has been announced to choose a contractor for the preparing a feasibility study for the restoration of the waterway. The winner will be announced in October 2014. It is expected that the feasibility study project will be presented in September 2015,” said Nikolai Kotetsky, Director General of the Dnieper-Bug Waterway Company.

The project, Restoration of the E-40 waterway on the Dnieper-Vistula section: from strategy to planning, is implemented as part of the Poland-Belarus-Ukraine cross-border program for 2007-2013 and is financed by the European Union. International technical assistance makes up €900 million at the first stage. The project is implemented in partnership with the local authorities, organizations engaged in water resources management and public associations of Belarus, Poland, and Ukraine under the auspices of the Transport and Communications Ministry of Belarus, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Poland and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine.
