EU offers funding for green projects in Belarus

Region:
02/07/2017

The EU has invited local authorities and NGOs in Belarus to apply for EU funding through its  “Supporting implementation of the Covenant of Mayors in Belarus” project. A deadline of 15 March has been set for grant applicants to submit proposals with an emphasis on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation.

The project targets legal entities in the 17 Belarusian cities that have signed the Covenant of Mayors. Initiatives should focus on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy use and/or adaptation to climate change in urban areas. Funding worth EUR 7,000-10,000 is available to NGOs while local authorities are eligible to receive between EUR 35,000 and EUR 45,000 .

Priority will be given to local initiatives which incorporate innovative activities and involve different stakeholders from local communities.

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is a bottom-up initiative which brings together local and regional authorities who have voluntarily committed to implementing the EU climate and energy objectives in their area. The overwhelming majority of signatories of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy are small to medium-sized cities which have set themselves ambitious long-term climate and energy policies to improve the quality of life for their citizens.
