Energy Efficient technologies to reduce thermal and electrical energy consumption in educational institutions twice


Closing conference of “Energy Efficiency in Schools” project took place in Minsk. The project is financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP Belarus .

Due to the technologies introduced by the project, thermal and electrical energy consumption in educational institutions will be reduced twice.

During 2013-2017, energy efficiency measures have been implemented in the following educational institutions:

1. Grodno kindergarten № 45
2. Oshmyany kindergarten № 6
3. Dzerzhynsk school № 4
4. Vitebsk M.F. Shmyryev State Vocational Engeneering College

The energy-efficient technologies introduced by the project have already shown impressive results. Monitoring for six months of four pilot sites in total:

- Reduction of heat energy consumption of 45% (average for all facilities)
- The decrease in energy consumption is 43% (on average for all objects)
- Saving money for all facilities -158.203 Belarusian roubles (€ 80.000 )

Andrea Wiktorin, Head of the European Union in Belarus, Ambassador, admitted in her welcoming speech: " 2 mln euro project allowed to provide 1,670 children with more comfortable, warmer and brighter studying conditions. I believe that investing in human capital is much more important and efficient than only investing in infrustructure. And our kids and teachers are the best human capital we can think of".

Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative, noted: "Scaling up and replication of this project's positive experience, as well as changing people's behaviour in dealing with natural resources, are especially important"

According to Mikhail Malashenko, Director of the Department of Energy Efficiency, four educational institutions will act as demonstration sites for the introduction of energy-efficient technologies demonstrating the benefits of using renewable energy sources. "We expect more and more energy effecient kindergartens, schools, colleges arising in Belarus," said Mikhail Malashenko.

The installation of solar panels will allow cutting the costs for heating by 50-100 percent (depending on the season). The use of a heat-recovery system will, in its turn, reduce the heat coming out with the exhaust gas by 60-70 percent. The walls and the roof in the educational institutions have been provided with the heat insulation. As the result, the energy consumption for space heating will also be reduced by 35 percent from the overall heat consumption.

The educational and information components of the project are also of great importance. 136 representatives of educational institutions took part in training seminars to increase their knowledge of energy efficiency teaching methods and methodologies. 27 teachers were selected and trained by the project’s experts to teach EE issues at optional classes in educational institutions.

The best practices developed in the framework of trainings became the basis for methodical manual, issued by the project.

The conference summed up the results of four years of the project’s implementation in Belarus. The project participants shared their positive experience in introducing energy-efficient technologies in Belarusian educational institutions and presented the prospects for further implementing energy efficiency in the education system throughout the country.

The implementation of their own project initiatives has led the work of pilots in promoting an energy-efficient lifestyle to a qualitatively new level. They tried non-standard and creative approaches:

-Theatrical staging of well-known fairy-tales that was published as a video manual
-Organization of excursions for preschool children and pupils on energy-efficient facilities in Belarus
-Participation and victory in the Republican competition of Energy Saving Projects “Energomaraphon”
-Use of modern technologies to create a powerful Internet resource and computer games on the topic of energy saving.

This work has not gone unnoticed: study tours for pedagogical teams from different parts of Belarus to the project’s pilot sites are being organized and become very popular. This is very important as pilots start to fulfill their most important function - they work as demonstration sites for the introduction of energy efficient technologies and a "green" lifestyle.
